PRINCESS
In her latest album Princess (2022), Monika Demmler aka Stony Sugarskull draws on the seemingly prevailing nihilism of the current time age, nevertheless encouraging the listener to become his/her “very own Princess,” and to catch the rainbow of beautiful experiences to the storm we’ve been going through: Beauty is truth, even in times of pain. For Princess, she was awarded the Silver Global Music Award and the Silver Remi Award.
In a similar way, her debut album Lioness (2020) was composed as a soundtrack to the times we live in, conveying a breakdown on the A-Side as loud and noisy, symbolizing change and birth of a new age as disturbing, at times even hurting. After a climax is reached, the B-side conveys the re-organization of chaos as a bridge connecting past and future, heart and reason, spirit and matter, aiming at a meaningful symbiosis of ecology and technology for our future generations.
LOVE BOMB
Monika Demmler’s next album Love Bomb is based on Einstein’s letter to his daughter about the universal force of love as an antidote to war:
“There is an extremely powerful force that, so far, science has not found a formal explanation to. It is a force that includes and governs all others, and is even behind any phenomenon operating in the universe and has not yet been identified by us.
The universal force is love. Love is light, that enlightens those who give and receive it. Love is gravity, because it makes some people feel attracted to others. Love is power, because it multiplies the best we have, and allows humanity not to be extinguished in their blind selfishness. Love unfolds and reveals. For love we live and die.
This force explains everything and gives meaning to life. This is the variable that we have ignored for too long, maybe because we are afraid of love because it is the only energy in the universe that man has not learned to drive at will. If instead of E = mc2, we accept that the energy to heal the world can be obtained through love multiplied by the speed of light squared, we arrive at the conclusion that love is the most powerful force there is, because it has no limits.
After the failure of humanity in the use and control of the other forces of the universe that have turned against us, it is urgent that we nourish ourselves with another kind of energy… If we want our species to survive, if we are to find meaning in life, if we want to save the world and every sentient being that inhabits it, love is the answer.
ZUCKER
Zucker sees Monika Demmler teaming up with German producer LeLeander and invites the listener to go on a ten-track voyage through a sonic experimental environment of electronica, deep/tech house, EDM, dance, jazz and psychedelia tinged with a punk attitude. Zucker was funded by Initiative Musik gGmbH and released on 15th December 2022 at The Moog Barcelona with selected shows in Germany and the USA.
Time is my Currency
The album captures the Zeitgeist in the form of a sonic contemplation on unconscious, unspoken fears and dreams. For instance, “Zeit ist meine Währung” refers to the concept of time speeding up in analogy to the image of a spiraling fractal against the backdrop of an uncertain “inflationary” future in “Zeit”. As a response, “Future Baby” motivates the listener to “unblock the future” and “search for the flowers in the garbage can.”
Demmler's ethereal, hypnotic vocals cut through monotonous beats like Bowie knives, […] their music calls to mind Ronnie Sethe's DJ sets in Berlin's underground sex dungeons. Warhol would be proud.
— Sound of Life/Zani
From the intricate and futuristic sounds of ‘Goose Bumps’ to the breakbeat-infused ‘Future Baby’, ‘Zucker’ is unapologetically different and distinctive.
